USMC CAMP H.M. SMITH, Hawaii On May 11, 2021, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific (MARFORPAC), and the University of Hawaii (UH) formalized an agreement to offer academic and workforce development programs that serve the needs of current and former service members.
Col. Michael J. Roach, MARFORPAC deputy chief of staff for manpower and reserve affairs, represented the Marine Corps. Representing UH were David Lassner, president; Michael Bruno, senior vice president for academic affairs; and Don Straney, vice president for student affairs. The agreement ceremony took place at the University’s main campus in Manoa, Honolulu.
MARFORPAC and UH leaders share the goal of providing service members with opportunities to further their education and enter the workforce with indemand skills. This partnership brings together the resources and expertise of both organizations to create innovative and customized programs that will benefit these dedicated individuals.
The partnership includes many key goals, including:
Prioritizing service members transitioning from active duty to civilian life and connecting them to UH programs that align with their future career goals,
Increasing UH research opportunities that involve service members to help solve military operational challenges,
Expanding academic opportunities for active duty Marines, including online and educational programs and those residing in areas not traditionally served by UH campuses,
Developing joint ventures with business and industry to create more opportunities for veterans and service members to gain employment in the civilian sector,
Engaging with local area education organizations to expand services for military students including spouses and dependents,
“The partnership is a natural fit,” said Lassner. “Our faculty and staff who serve our militaryconnected students are among the most passionate people on our campus. They are veterans, spouses, parents, and community members dedicated to making a real difference in the lives of our militaryconnected students.”
MARFORPAC and UH are both invested in the success of current and former service members. The new agreement will provide access to educational and workforce development opportunities that will empower these individuals to achieve their goals.
