The Smell of Wet Earth
Someone was whistling, a jaunty little tune that hung in the air like a faint perfume. I couldn't see them, but the whistling was coming from the garden.
I opened the back door and stepped outside. The sun was dipping below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the garden. The flowers were all in bloom, their colors vibrant in the fading light. I took a deep breath and let the scent of wet earth fill my lungs.
The smell of wet earth is one of my favorite smells. It always reminds me of spring and new beginnings. It's the smell of life after rain, and it fills me with a sense of hope and optimism.
Rain.
The word hung like a cloud over the happy scene. I closed my eyes and saw it: a monsoon, a downpour of biblical proportions, the garden drowning under a relentless torrent. The flowers, the trees, the carefully tended lawn, all washed away in a matter of minutes.
I opened my eyes and took another deep breath of wet earth. The rain could wait. For now, I would just enjoy the moment.
I walked over to the edge of the garden and looked out over the fields. The sun was almost gone, and the sky was a deep blue. A few stars were beginning to twinkle in the distance.
I took a seat on the bench and closed my eyes. The sound of the birds singing drifted to me on the evening breeze. The smell of wet earth filled my lungs. This is what it means to be alive, I thought. This is happiness.
The sound of a door opening drew me out of my reverie. I opened my eyes and saw my wife, Sarah, standing in the doorway. She was smiling at me.
"I'm glad you're out here," she said. "I was just thinking about you."
I stood up and took her hand. "I was just thinking about you too," I said.
We walked back to the house together. As we passed the rose bush, I couldn't help but notice the single bloom that had opened that day. It was a deep red, and it looked perfect in the fading light.
Sarah stopped and plucked the bloom from the bush. She held it out to me.
"For you," she said.
I took the flower and held it in my hand. It was beautiful. The perfect ending to a perfect day.
